The designers hope that the Cleverbot can so successfully simulate the experience of talking to a person that it will baffle judges at the upcoming Loebner Prize Competition in Artificial Intelligence. I think there’s more potential value in chatbots than simply jumping on a tech bandwagon. They can provide opportunities to practise interactive conversation with ‘someone’ who appears to speak English, but without judging orlaughing at them.
